The Magic of the South Luangwa

The South Luangwa National Park is a pristine wilderness in eastern Zambia, and is part of the broader Luangwa Valley. The Valley is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including around 100 species of mammals, more than 400 bird species and over 2000 types of plants.

Added to this, there is an amazing density of game, particularly along the riverine strip. Our guests often comment that ‘there’s something around every corner'.

Fabulous Flatdogs- a gateway to the wondrous Luangwa

We came back to Flatdogs after 10 years and spent 2 wonderful nights there. It was and is one of our favourite places to visit and we had an amazing experience. We stayed in chalet 2b which was huge with its own kitchenette although we didn’t use it as there is an all day restaurant available with a long menu list and daily specials all freshly made, beautifully presented and delicious. The pool area is lovely with views over the river. Jess, Ade & Harold were fantastic hosts as were all the staff who were excellent and it felt like home away from home. Our guide was Yotam and he was brilliant as we saw lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes and wild dogs amongst others as well as a lion eating a kill and the interaction between him and the lionesses, being stuck in an elephant traffic jam, and watching hyenas firstly steal a leopards kill and secondly eat a buffalo that was stuck in the mud. The Luangwa is a stunning place to visit.

Harold also kindly took us the Project Luangwa sponsored school (Flatdogs is a donor) and it was heartwarming to meet the boys that we sponsor and the coordinator Mable and to hear the effort and the drive behind the project to provide sustainability to the area. Flatdogs was a wonderful trip and we hope we can fulfil our vow to be back every year!
